Polarized light microscopy is a niche, specialized, cutting edge practice that you wont find anywhere else. If every 16 to 18 year old had a PLM analysis we would be able to determine if they would experience hair loss in their lifetime!

Looking at the at the bulb and hair under polarized light, as opposed to white light ,gives us the proper view of the hair to determine specific information regarding types of hair loss and the hair health we would not otherwise be able to see. We use PLM to not only evaluate the health of the hair but to track hair loss using something called a Trichogram analysis. This is a mathematical equation that is used using the hairs extracted to give us a qualitative analysis. We will be able to determine the stages of hair growth, the amount of miniaturization and pre-miniaturization, the caliber, if there is excess sebum as well as demodex, a common mite. Lastly we measure the follicle depth or anchoring system to determine the onset of androgenic alopecia or hypotrichia, a lessor known type of hair loss that also causes hair miniaturization.

PLM is used during the Hair and Scalp Analysis service and again in 6 months to track progress. It can also be done as a stand alone treatment to learn more about your hair health, if there are signs of hair loss and the type of hair loss.
